SISTERS
Sisters is a multipart series of paintings created using unconventional surface materials.
I made the paper surfaces from recycled scraps and shredded receipts found in my home. I was driven to create this work in an effort to find sustainable and economical solutions in my creative practice. Thoughts about my own consumption, consumerism, beauty, and ecofeminism flow through this body of work. Each element of material speaks to my personal exploration of the relationship between nature and sisterhood.
The installation space chosen was intended to connect the work back to nature, but also contrast traditional white institutional spaces. The outdoor installation explores the contrast between material and form, which is further activated through the wind, shadow and light.
The unexpected outcome of the paper texture reminds me of scarred skin. The paint application was activated through body, movement, and intuitive brushstrokes of colours inspired by beauty found in nature, flowers, and the female form.
The two bark tree pieces were given to me by a group of male friends who cut down this very tree last spring. I chose to paint the interior of the bark to contrast the beauty of nature and human destruction. I followed the patterns on the bark and painted them in red and blue. The red tone is featured in the other paintings through subtle lines and movement.
I installed the final work at the park with my older sister Sydney, across the street from her home.
I featured the sounds from my paper making process and a sound clip I requested from a video the men took when they were cutting down the tree.
