SORRY BACK
We will meet at a distance
Near the beginning
Past unmended time
Past unlettered lore
You will be the way
We imagined you could be
Not the ghost
of bygone history

Child of the jungle
Sunless seed
Stone thrower
Tumbleweed
Now the tiger tails melt
The chip truck closed
Machete by the bed
A white November rose
For every day missed
Sorry dad.

"Time is the greatest distance between places." - tennessee williams
Sorry Back is an egg tempera painting reimagining the little corner store we would visit with our dad growing up. Now it is the place we will meet again.
This work is inspired by a mysterious message I found written in red paint on the light pole outside of this shop that reads, "sorry courtney".
I found the image below on google maps while gathering source images of this building. Now the letters are now covered in a ghostly coat of white paint, but we can still make out the message.

Process:
- I stretch raw linen on a birch wood canvas support
- I prepared rabbit skin glue (size)
- mixed, applied, sanded the chalk glue gesso surface until it was buttery smooth
- pencil sketch to develop the composition and light/dark values
- pencil crayon sketch on tracing paper for colour
- panel underpainting in layers of india ink and water to build up values
- egg tempera involved may layers to achieve the dark, jewel like values (yolk of an egg and water mixed with pigments)
- little to no white and black pigment was used
